Fiksieredigering & Fiction Editing

(Scroll down for the English workshop!) Die volle program, registrasiebesonderhede of nadere inligting is beskikbaar by PEG se administrasiebeampte, Ellyn Barry, ellynbarry@telkomsa.net. Ellyn se telefoon- en faksnommer: 011 792 5768. Sluitingsdatum vir registrasie: Maandag 5 Mei 2014.

 * * * The Professional Editors’ Group has pleasure in announcing that the fifth annual workshop on ‘Editing Works of Fiction’ will be taking place in the run-up to the Franschhoek Literary Festival. Dates: 14 and 15 May 2014 Times: 08:30 to 17:00 Venue: Klein Waterval Riverside Lodge and Conference Centre, Franschhoek Price: PEG members/students – R1 680 (R1 450 early-bird special until 17 April) LAMP members – R1 970 (R1 720 early-bird special until 17 April) Non-members – R2 420 (R2 070 early-bird special until 17 April) Building on the sold-out workshops staged by PEG in 2011, 2012 and 2013 – and in response to requests from practitioners to provide more hands-on training in this highly specialised area of editing – this 2014 workshop will introduce a new topic, a new genre, and a fascinating new twist: groups of editors will edit a real fiction manuscript with a difference: a selection of stories that will be published on FunDza’s mobi website! (Digital publishing at its most ‘mobile’!) Published by FunDza for the youth market, these stories – all of which have to be edited – are eagerly awaited by thousands of avid readers, and read using Mxit. In a number of small-group sessions spread over the two days, while working on texts for publication, delegates will be experiencing aspects of fiction writing such as strong beginnings and satisfying endings; story versus plot; characterisation; narrative/narrator; clear, punchy writing, and appealing dialogue that befits a digital environment. You may even have an opportunity to meet the publisher and hear first hand about the joys and special issues involved in working in this stimulating, cutting-edge genre. Once again two of South Africa’s best, most experienced writer-editors in the genre will be your facilitators, known for the power of their ‘listening circle’ approach to workshop participation: Maire Fisher and Nella Freund. Limited places are available for these English-language sessions (a maximum of 20 people). Attendees must undertake to read an entire manuscript as a prerequisite for full participation in the workshop, and each bring a dictionary and/or a thesaurus. To register with or direct enquires to the PEG administrator, Ellyn Barry, at ellynbarry@telkomsa.net. Ellyn can also be called or faxed on 011 792 5768. Closing date for registrations: Monday 5 May 2014.
